The run begins at the trailboard at the Horine Center.
There will be a place to put drop bags if you choose, as you will pass this area twice. The runner will travel counterclockwise around the entire red trail (approx. 5 miles), returning to the Horine Center. The runner will then pass through the parking lot and out onto the forest road. After a ¼ mile travel along the road, the forest road empties out onto Holsclaw Hill Road, where the runner will turn right and travel down the road approximately ½ mile to the turn-in for the Yost section of the trail. The runner will turn directly left into the forest, then travel approximately 7.5 miles counterclockwise around the Yost section. After making the entire “circle,” the runners will return to the road, take a right turn and return on the road to Horine. All runners will take a right at the drop bags and head down into the woods past the pit toilets to a small lake. The 15 mile runners will circle the lake and return to Horine and the finish. The 50K runners will travel counterclockwise around the lake also, but at the bottom of the hill will take a right (it will be marked very well and/or there will be a live body telling you where to go) onto a gravel road which leads to Mitchell Hill Road and the visitor’s center. The runner then travels to the 1-mile point on the Siltstone Trail, turns right along a foot bridge and travels to a playground/aid station. The runner then enters the Purple Heart Trail, which is about 2 miles long and leads back to the Siltstone. The entire Siltstone Trail is then followed out to Scott’s Gap road, where there is an aid station and a turn around. We will not be running the Scott’s Gap circle this year due to that area “resting.” After a return trip on the Siltstone and the Purple Heart Trail, the runner will take the road back to the Visitor’s Center (approx 1 mile), then back down Mitchell Hill Road for about ¼ mile, through the woods back up to Horine and the finish. There will be 8 aid stations for the 50K and 3 for the 15 mile. |
